After listening to one of my friends talk about how much fun disc golf was I finally let him show me what the big deal was about. I enjoyed it so much that I got myself a starter set of amazon for about $40 and I was all set! My goal today is to peak your interest enough about disc golf that you will go out and buy a starter set and give it a try. If you know me personally then slide into my dms and lets go disc golfing!
Before we get carried away let's learn a little bit about disc golf, also known as frisbee golf. Disc Golf is a popular outdoor recreational activity that combines elements of golf and frisbee. Instead of using clubs and balls, players use specially designed flying discs to complete a course in as few throws as possible.
Barrier to Entry: Low Cost and Equipment One of the most appealing aspects of disc golf is its extremely low barrier to entry. For as little as $40, you can purchase a starter set of discs on platforms like Amazon. This set typically includes a driver, a mid-range disc, and a putter—essentially everything you need to get started. This affordability makes it easy for anyone, regardless of their budget, to pick up the sport and start playing. Compared to traditional golf, which often requires investing in a set of clubs, balls, and other accessories, disc golf's minimal equipment costs make it much more accessible.
Convenience and Accessibility Disc golf courses are found in various locations, ranging from city parks to scenic trails. This widespread availability means that you can likely find a course within a short distance of your home. As you've mentioned, having a course just five minutes away from your house offers tremendous convenience. This accessibility makes it easy to fit in a quick game during lunch breaks, after work, or on weekends. For those who work remotely, like yourself, having a course nearby provides a perfect opportunity for a midday break and a chance to enjoy some outdoor activity.
Shared Equipment and Inclusiveness Disc golf's inclusive nature is a standout feature. When inviting friends or family to play with you, the fact that they don't need to invest in a whole new set of discs is a significant advantage. This shared equipment aspect encourages new players to give the sport a try without any financial commitment. Moreover, introducing someone to disc golf can be as simple as lending them a disc from your collection. This inclusiveness fosters a sense of community and makes the sport appealing to a broader audience.
Family friendly: Listen up dads disc golf is a great family sport. You can grab the kids and wife and go play a little round. You and the wife can play a round while the little ones throw a disc around and work on their game.
Okay fine I lied there were 4 huge selling points to disc golf I wanted to point out not 2. Moving on, here are the basics of disc golf it's pretty much golf with a few differences:
Objective:
The main objective of disc golf is to complete a course in as few throws as possible. Players aim to throw their discs from a designated starting point (tee) toward a target (usually a metal basket with hanging chains and a catching tray) in the fewest throws possible. Sound familiar?
Equipment:
1. Discs: Disc golf discs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for specific types of throws. There are three main types of discs:
- Drivers: These discs are designed for long-distance throws and maximum speed. They have a sharp edge and are used for tee-off shots.
- Mid-range Discs: These discs offer a balance between distance and control. They are suitable for shorter shots that require precision.
- Putters: Putters are designed for accuracy and short-distance throws, usually used for getting the disc into the target.
- Each disc will have 4 different ratings on them that change how the disc behaves when you throw it but I am not going to get into that here. If disc golf interests you, then this will come in due time.
2. Targets (Baskets): The targets in disc golf are metal baskets with hanging chains. The chains slow down the disc's momentum and help it drop into the catching tray, which is the bottom of the basket.
Gameplay:
1. Starting Point (Tee): Each hole on the disc golf course has a designated starting point called the tee. Players take turns throwing from the tee in a predetermined order.
2. Throwing: A player throws their disc from the tee with the intention of reaching the target in as few throws as possible. The player's next throw is taken from where the disc landed, and this process continues until the disc comes to rest in the target.
3. Strokes: Each throw is counted as a stroke. The player with the fewest strokes at the end of the round or game wins. Players aim to complete each hole using the fewest strokes possible.
4. Fairway Play: Players must navigate around trees, obstacles, and varied terrain to reach the target. Each throw requires consideration of the disc's flight characteristics and the course layout.
5. Scoring: After completing the hole, players record the number of throws (strokes) it took to reach the target. The player with the lowest total score at the end of the round or game wins.
6. Course Design: Disc golf courses vary in length and difficulty. Courses can be set up in parks, forests, open fields, and other outdoor settings. The design of the course takes advantage of natural obstacles and terrain features to create a challenging and engaging experience.
7. Etiquette: Similar to traditional golf, disc golf has etiquette rules. Players should maintain a respectful pace, not disturb other players, and follow course rules and guidelines.
Disc golf is a fun and inclusive activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. It combines outdoor exercise, strategy, and a friendly competitive spirit, making it a great way to spend time outdoors with friends and family. I took up disc golf because I felt like it could be a fun family activity to do with my wife and kids. I still haven't been able to get all of them out there on the course, but I better do it soon because you know....winter is coming!
